Built in the NSW high country near the border with Victoria, Khancoban was established to house workers on the Snowy Mountains Hydro Electric Scheme. The nearby Khancoban Pondage is part of the Scheme with the 3km lake now a playground for fun & adventure.
There are some excellent walks in the surrounding mountain ranges, including the Major Clews Hut walk that begins 16 kilometres south of Khancoban. You’ll hike through forests, along ridgelines & through gullies, with magnificent views all along the track. The Round Mountain Hut walk is another scenic & relatively easy route, especially when the wildflowers are out.
In the warmer months, swimming, kayaking, waterskiing & wakeboarding are all popular, while fishermen utilise the lake all year round. The view over the water is quite beautiful, especially in autumn when the leaves turn the landscape into a symphony of colours. There is a good boat ramp by the lake, as well as bbq’s to cook up your catch.
In winter, Khancoban’s location on the Alpine Way means skiing & snowboarding at Thredbo is 65km away along the Alpine Way. Head off early for the slopes & then return to enjoy a hearty meal by one of our fire places of an evening.
The Alpine Inn was purchased by Highclere Hospitality in 2023 & has been meticulously renovated. With 36 beautifully decorated rooms & a bistro that fits 130 people as well as outdoor seating for over 200 the Alpine has become a destination venue for the area.

Getting Here
Khancoban is south of Tumbarumba on the scenic Alpine Way that connects Thredbo & Jindabyne.
The town is a 6hr drive from Sydney, 5hr drive from Melbourne, 3.5hr from Canberra & less than 2hrs from Albury & Wagga, where flights arrive daily from Melbourne, Sydney & Brisbane.
Flying into Albury & Wagga & picking up a car at the airport is an easy way to get to the valleys.
